About
The Château de Clisson grew from the Middle Ages on a spur overlooking the Sèvre Nantaise. It became one of the great strongholds of the Marches of Brittany and remains associated with the powerful Clisson family. Walls, towers, living quarters and defences were added on top of each other over the centuries. Destruction and abandonment, especially during the Revolution, then turned the site into a spectacular ruin. The visit is essentially of open-air stone architecture. The ruined volumes, the views over the town and the Sèvre, and the routes through the fortress make the site particularly photogenic. The Department-owned estate has seasonal opening hours, with tours and activities according to the calendar.
