About
The Château des ducs de Bretagne was rebuilt from the 15th century by Francis II, the last Duke of Brittany, and the work continued under Anne of Brittany. It became both an urban fortress and a princely residence. From the courtyard, the contrast between the defensive walls and the pale facades of the palace is striking. The monument had many military and administrative uses before a major restoration completed in the early 21st century. The Nantes History Museum occupies 32 rooms and covers the history of the city, from Brittany to the Atlantic port, from the slave trade to industrialisation and the world wars. The courtyard, moats and about 500 metres of ramparts are free to visit. In 2026, the museum is open from 10 am to 6 pm and closed on Mondays outside July and August. The courtyard and ramparts are open every day from 8.30 am to 7 pm outside summer.
