About
Since the Middle Ages, the Château de Pornic has stood on a strategic headland above the port. It passed notably into the hands of the lords of Rais and remains linked to the political and maritime history of the Pays de Retz. Greatly transformed over time, it took on much of its current look in the 19th century, especially during restorations in a historicist style. Its outline now dominates the port as an inseparable part of the townscape. The château is privately owned. You admire it mainly from the quays, the bridge, the paths and the viewpoints around the port. Special guided tours may be organised in season or during the Heritage Days. The château is not open for self-guided visits: any visit inside must be on a date officially organised by the tourist office or the owners.
