About

The Mathurin Méheut Museum is devoted to one of the most prolific Breton artists of the 20th century. Born in Lamballe in 1882 and died in 1958, Mathurin Méheut was a painter, draughtsman, illustrator, decorator, ceramicist and sculptor. His work combines scientific observation, ethnography, decorative art and a fascination with the living world. A first museum opened in 1972 in the Maison du Bourreau in Lamballe. Awarded the Musée de France label in 2002, it left that building, which had become too small, and reopened in June 2022 in the renovated former stables of the Haras National. The new space has a more generous layout and lets the works on display change regularly. The collections come largely from the artist’s studio and archives, passed on by his heirs and enriched over time. Studies of fish and seaweed, work scenes, pardons, craftspeople, wildlife, plants, decorative projects and ceramics show an artist constantly drawing and recording the world around him. The route highlights Méheut’s way of working. He observed on the spot, filled his sketchbooks and then reused the shapes in books, ocean liner decors, tableware, textiles, panels and large commissions. This constant flow between documentary study and decorative arts explains the impressive variety of his work. In 2026, the exhibition Henri Rivière - Mathurin Méheut: Regards japonisants en Bretagne sets Méheut alongside Henri Rivière. On from 4 April 2026 to 2 January 2027, it explores how Japanese prints and their framing shaped their view of landscapes and Brittany. Outside the school holidays, the museum is open Tuesday to Saturday from 2 pm to 5.30 pm. Adult entry is €8, reduced €5 and €4 for ages 6 to 17. The museum has held the Tourisme & Handicap label for all four types of disability since 2024.
