About

The Musée de Pont-Aven tells the story of one of the most famous artistic adventures linked to Brittany. Its mission is to document artistic life in the region between 1850 and 1950, with a central place for the Pont-Aven School and the artists who, around Paul Gauguin, Émile Bernard and Paul Sérusier, profoundly renewed painting at the end of the 19th century. The municipal museum was founded in 1985. After major works, it reopened on 26 March 2016 in a completely redesigned building around the former annexe of the Hôtel Julia, an iconic meeting place for artists. The contemporary architecture now combines permanent collections, temporary exhibitions and views over the town. The collection holds more than 5,000 works and documents. Paintings, drawings, prints, posters, archives and photographs tell the story less of a single style than of an artistic community: meetings in the guesthouses, the landscapes of the Aven, the chapels, the local people and the experiments that led to Synthetism and new ways of using colour and line. The permanent route explains Gauguin’s role without reducing Pont-Aven to his name alone. Émile Bernard, Paul Sérusier, Maxime Maufra, Henry Moret and many other painters show the diversity of the work done in Brittany. The displays change regularly, notably to protect works on paper and keep the collections alive. In 2026, the museum also benefits from loans from the Quimper Museum of Fine Arts during its closure. Twelve works linked to the Pont-Aven School temporarily enrich the route. From 27 June to 8 November 2026, the exhibition Au temps de Camille Claudel, être sculptrice à Paris highlights women sculptors active around the end of the 19th century. During the exhibition, entry costs €8 full price and €6 reduced. The museum is open from 10 am to 6 pm, every day except Monday.
