About
The Hôtel & Spa de la Citadelle stands on Place du Marché, in the heart of Port-Louis, a small fortified maritime town facing the Lorient harbour. It is about 250 metres from the beach and within walking distance of the citadel, the Musée de la Compagnie des Indes, the harbour, restaurants and the ferry piers. The hotel is rated 3 stars and has 31 rooms and suites. Opened in the early 1950s and later taken over by Caroline and Jean-Michel, the house was extensively renovated in 2021. The decor is deliberately simple, natural and inspired by the seaside, closer to a large holiday home than a standard hotel. Rooms look onto the courtyard, the garden, Place du Marché or the sea. There are nine types: Solo Room, Classic Room, Superior Double, Superior Double Sea View, Superior Triple, Superior Family Room, Junior Suite Sea View, Sea View Suite with Sauna and Apartment with Terrace. The Solo Room faces south over Place du Marché. The Classic rooms are quieter, some opening onto the walled garden. The Superior rooms are more spacious and suit couples as well as families. One Superior Double room is adapted for people with reduced mobility. The lift serves all rooms, a real advantage in a town-centre house. The Sea View categories overlook the Lorient harbour and its boat traffic. The Junior Suite Sea View is for more comfortable stays, while the Sea View Suite with Sauna is the signature category: about 58 m², two bedrooms, a lounge with a large screen, separate toilet, a bathroom with shower and bath, a panoramic view and a private sauna facing the sea. It sleeps up to four, with a fifth person possible for a supplement. The Apartment with Terrace completes the offer for travellers who want more independence, with a large living room, a double bedroom and a private terrace. The hotel’s wellness area is booked for private use. It has a sauna, a hammam, a sensory shower and an outdoor hot tub. A 45-minute session costs €50, and access is for over-16s only. Flip-flops or plastic sandals are compulsory. The outdoor hot tub has many massage jets. The sensory shower offers several settings combining water, temperatures, lights and scents. The hotel also offers Pilates classes and fitness activities at certain times. Breakfast is a sweet and savoury buffet, costing €17 for adults and €10 for children under 10. It is served from 7.30 am on weekdays; check the weekend and holiday times with the hotel. Food on site is more a bar and sharing table than a classic restaurant. The Bar and the Table Gourmande serve oysters, home-smoked salmon, boards of cold meats or cheeses, jars, local drinks and a wine cellar. Two partner restaurants a few minutes’ walk away complete the offer for meals. The walled garden is part of the house’s charm. Two hundred-year-old magnolias recall the age of the site and create a rare place to relax in the town centre. In winter, the small lounge and its fireplace add to the homely feel. Check-in is from 3 pm to 8 pm and check-out before 11 am. Reception is open from 8 am to 8 pm every day. Let the hotel know in advance if you will arrive after 8 pm. Early check-in or late check-out until 2 pm may be granted on confirmation, for €10 per hour. Car parking is in free public car parks nearby. Bikes have a private, enclosed storage area. A paid EV charging point is available on request at reception. Dogs are accepted for €15 per night, on a lead. They are not allowed in the dining area or the wellness area. A baby travel cot costs €15 per stay, and a twin setup costs €10 extra. The hotel has a structured environmental approach and holds the EU Ecolabel. The owners encourage travel on foot, by bike and by public transport. Port-Louis lends itself well to this, thanks to the boat-bus to Lorient and the local sea links. For businesses, two meeting rooms of about 50 m² and 40 m² are available all year, for about 24 and 12 people in a U-shape. The lounge, bar and garden can complement them, with catering from local partner restaurants. Finally, the location lets you explore without long journeys: Lorient by boat-bus, the island of Groix, Gâvres, the ria of Étel, Carnac, Auray and the coastal paths. For a stay of two or three nights, the Citadelle combines maritime heritage, the beach, wellness and green travel.
