About

The Musée d’Arts de Nantes is one of the great art museums of western France. Its collections bring together more than 14,000 works covering nine centuries of creation, from the Middle Ages to the 21st century. Nearly half belongs to modern and contemporary art. The institution dates back to 1801, when Nantes was one of the cities chosen to host a museum. The decisive acquisition came in 1810 with the collection of François Cacault: 1,155 paintings, 64 sculptures and around 10,000 prints formed an exceptional foundation. The current Palais des Beaux-Arts was inaugurated in 1900. Its large galleries house the collections of old masters and 19th-century art. Highlights include three paintings by Georges de La Tour. After six years of renovation and extension, the museum reopened in 2017 under its current name. The historic Palais is linked to the Chapelle de l’Oratoire and to the Cube, a contemporary building of more than 2,000 m² over four levels. The route takes you from the old masters to the 19th century, modern art and then contemporary installations. This chronological continuity is one of the museum’s great strengths. The museum is open from 11 am to 7 pm, with a free late opening every Thursday until 9 pm. It is closed on Tuesdays outside the summer schedule.
