About
The Musée du Faouët is devoted to artists who stayed, worked or found inspiration in this small Morbihan town and, more widely, in Brittany. From the late 19th century, many painters and draughtsmen came to observe the markets, pardons, costumes, chapels, landscapes and rural life. The museum is set in a former school, and its collection has grown through acquisitions, donations and bequests. It lets you follow artists who are often little known to the general public but essential for understanding how Brittany was portrayed between 1850 and the mid-20th century. Le Faouët attracted artists with its heritage and its bustle. The 16th-century covered market, the markets, the chapel of Sainte-Barbe, the pardons and the costumes provided subjects that artists approached with very different aims: ethnographic observation, genre scenes, a search for the picturesque or artistic experiment. Every year, the museum stages a major themed exhibition combining its own works and loans. This gives the place a lively identity: a visit can be very different from one year to the next, depending on the theme. In 2026, the exhibition Les sonneurs vus par les artistes en Bretagne (1800-1950) brought together more than a century of images of Breton musicians, with more than 120 works, objects and documents. The 2026 season ended on 4 October.
