About
Saint-Gérand is named after a 6th century hermit from Wales. This trail follows the Nantes to Brest canal, from lock to lock. Dug between 1811 and 1842 at Napoleon’s initiative to get around the British blockade, the canal was largely built by prisoners of war. The Saint-Drédeno spring, separated from its chapel by the canal, was believed to cure skin diseases. The 16th century chapel, in Flamboyant Gothic style, bears the lozenges of the Rohan family. The route then follows the lock flights, a colossal piece of engineering to cross the high ground between the Oust and the Blavet. The loop is 6.8 km long; allow about 1 h 40 of walking. The stated level is easy. Start: Keroret, car park along the RD 768 bis, in Saint-Gérand. The official route, published by Pontivy Communauté, is shown on the map and can be downloaded as a GPX file to follow on your phone. The route is listed in the département’s official walking route plan (PDIPR).
