About
The site of La Bretesche has a long medieval history, linked to a fortress built on the edge of the Brière marshes. The castle suffered badly during the Revolution and was largely rebuilt in the 19th century. The historicist rebuilding favoured an ideal image of the medieval castle, with tall roofs, towers and façades reflected in the lake. The result is one of the most spectacular ensembles of its kind in the region. The castle itself is now private, divided into apartments, and cannot be visited like a classic monument. The surrounding estate includes a hotel, a golf course and areas open according to the services on offer. La Bretesche is not a castle open for free visits. Access to the estate depends on the public areas, the hotel, the golf course and events.
