A spring tide is a sea that rises higher and falls lower than usual. It is measured by the coefficient, from 20 to 120: above 100, a show is guaranteed, with waves on the sea walls at high tide and huge foreshores at low tide.
The 2027 calendar
| Period | Highest coefficient |
|---|---|
| 23 to 25 January | 107, on 24 January |
| 21 to 24 February | 110, on 22 February |
| 22 to 24 March | 106, on 23 March |
| 3 to 6 August | 108, on 4 August |
| 31 August to 4 September | 112, on 2 September |
| 29 September to 2 October | 109, on 1 October |
The highest tides of the year come in early September: the coefficient reaches 112 on 2 September. The February and March tides, close to the equinox, are the most spectacular when they coincide with a storm.
These coefficients come from the tide tables published for 2027; specialist websites may differ by a point. For the exact time of low tide in your harbour, check the SHOM predictions.
Where to see the spring tides
In Saint-Malo, the waves break over the Sillon sea wall at high tide, especially in a westerly wind. The Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel, where the difference between high and low tide exceeds ten metres, is one of the most impressive in Europe: watch it from the Pointe du Grouin, Mont Dol or the viewpoints around the bay.
