What to do in Cap Sizun and at the Pointe du Raz

The Pointe du Raz, the Baie des Trépassés, the Pointe du Van, the Île de Sein, Audierne, the bird reserve and Pont-Croix: the guide to Cap Sizun, at the far end of Finistère.

6 min read

Cap Sizun is the last outpost of Cornouaille in the ocean. Its cliffs end at the Pointe du Raz, facing the Raz de Sein, one of the passages sailors fear most.

The Pointe du Raz

Awarded the Grand Site de France label, the headland is reached on foot from the car park and visitor centre, along a path through the heath. At the end, the Vieille lighthouse, the Tévennec lighthouse in the distance, and the Île de Sein on the horizon.

The Baie des Trépassés and the Pointe du Van

Between the Pointe du Raz and the Pointe du Van, the Baie des Trépassés opens onto a large sandy beach facing the rollers, popular with surfers. The Pointe du Van, wilder and less visited, has its Saint-They chapel on the edge of the cliff.

The Île de Sein

From Audierne, boats take about an hour to reach the Île de Sein. The island is completely flat and can be explored on foot: narrow lanes, the Goulenez lighthouse, and the memory of the sailors who left to join Free France in 1940.

Audierne, Pont-Croix and the birds

Audierne is the harbour of Cap Sizun, on the Goyen estuary. Upstream, Pont-Croix keeps its cobbled lanes and collegiate church. On the north coast, in Goulien, the Cap Sizun reserve welcomes colonies of seabirds nesting in the cliff in spring.
