About
The Brest Museum of Fine Arts holds one of the great art collections of western Brittany. Its identity is closely tied to the sea and the region: seascapes, Breton-inspired painting, history painting, Orientalism, Symbolism, the Pont-Aven School, the Nabis and abstraction are among the main strands of the collection. The museum’s history was marked by the destruction of Brest during the Second World War. The 19th-century museum was destroyed in 1941 and the collections were badly affected. A new building was inaugurated in 1968 in the rebuilt city. Since then, acquisitions, donations and loans have rebuilt a collection now estimated at about 15,000 works. The usual route set seascapes alongside depictions of Brittany, then the great movements of the late 19th and 20th centuries. The Pont-Aven School and the Nabis take an important place, as do the Symbolist artists and modern works linked to abstraction. But the visiting situation changed completely in January 2025. After mould was found on 18 works on display, Brest métropole closed the building to protect the collections. It was then decided not to reopen it to the public before a deeper transformation. The 190 works that were on display were quarantined and treated. At the same time, the whole collection is undergoing a large-scale conservation project. A new collections conservation centre is planned for around 2029, before a later renovation of the museum itself. The Brest Museum of Fine Arts building is therefore closed to the public for several years. The team still offers exhibitions and events in other venues.
