About
The Château de Brest holds a strategic position at the mouth of the Penfeld. Its defensive history goes back to late Antiquity and continues through the Middle Ages, the early modern period and the great military works of the port of Brest. The towers and curtain walls have been altered many times. The whole keeps these layers: ancient remains, medieval architecture, adaptations for artillery and then modern fortifications. The castle houses the National Navy Museum. Models, objects, ship sculptures and outdoor trails tell the story of the arsenal, shipbuilding, expeditions and the French Navy. The views over the Penfeld and the roadstead are part and parcel of the visit. The museum is on its autumn hours: 1.30 pm to 6.30 pm, every day except Tuesday. The full 2026 price is €12. The site has about 500 steps.
