About

The bay of Pont-Mahé is one of the most unusual seaside sites in Loire-Atlantique. Its shallow water means you can stand a long way out, which has earned it the nickname “Mediterranean of the West”. The site is part of Natura 2000 and has a dune area of about 24 hectares owned by the Conservatoire du littoral. The beach is lifeguarded from 1 July to 31 August and equipped for people with reduced mobility. Pont-Mahé is also a major kitesurfing and windsurfing spot, with a dedicated channel, a buffer zone and precise seasonal zoning. To really swim, the town advises a tidal coefficient above 70. The main concern is water quality: it is rated sufficient, and the bay still has episodes of bacterial pollution that can lead to temporary bans. In 2026, several closures and reopenings were announced. Dogs and other animals are banned from all Assérac beaches from 1 April to 30 September, even on a lead.
