About
Starting from the church square in Ossé, part of the commune of Châteaugiron, this path follows an old Roman road. After Brittany was annexed in 1532, this road was used for smuggling salt: the salt traders, the “saulniers”, avoided paying the gabelle, the salt tax. The track came from Veneffles or Châteaugiron and continued towards the Mayenne via Étrelles. Most of it has since disappeared under the D104 or through land consolidation. The route is 2.8 km long; allow about 40 minutes of walking. Start: Place de l’Église, in Ossé. The official route, published by Pays de Châteaugiron Communauté, is shown on the map and can be downloaded as a GPX file to follow on your phone.
