About
A green haven in the heart of Pontivy, the Houssaye site lived in the 15th century to the rhythm of a large grain and livestock fair. Every summer the chapel now hosts “L’art dans les chapelles”. The foundation stone of the chapel, commissioned by Jean IX, Viscount of Rohan, was laid in 1438: note its carved details and its unusual staircase up to the bell turret, as well as the 17th century calvary. The present spring, at the foot of the hill, dates from 1994; another, from 1724, lies 500 m further on. The path crosses the bridge over the Saint-Niel stream, a strategic post during the Wars of Religion, then enters the peat heath. The loop is 3 km long; allow about 45 minutes of walking. The stated level is easy. Start: the Houssaye chapel, in Pontivy. The official route, published by Pontivy Communauté, is shown on the map and can be downloaded as a GPX file to follow on your phone. The route is listed in the département’s official walking route plan (PDIPR).
