About
In the Middle Ages, the village of Gohazé, in Saint-Thuriau, was the seat of Pontivy’s first parish, recorded as early as 1160. Its name is said to mean “old lady sitting down”. The late 16th century Notre-Dame du Gohazé chapel, in Flamboyant Gothic style, is surrounded by an old cemetery and a fine 16th century calvary; legend has it that the statue of the Virgin returned to the chapel on her own every time it was taken to Pontivy. In the wood stands a second, monolithic calvary. A very steep lane still bears the marks of carts, then the towpath follows the Blavet to the Roch mill, recorded as early as 1471. The loop is 4.6 km long; allow about 1 h 10 of walking. The stated level is difficult. Start: the Gohazé chapel, in Saint-Thuriau. The official route, published by Pontivy Communauté, is shown on the map and can be downloaded as a GPX file to follow on your phone. The route is listed in the département’s official walking route plan (PDIPR).
