About
The Château de Vitré was born in the Middle Ages on a strategic position in the Marches of Brittany. It was gradually rebuilt and strengthened between the 13th and 15th centuries. Its triangular plan follows the rocky spur. Towers, gatehouse, curtain walls and living quarters form an instantly recognisable silhouette. The town hall, housed in part of the buildings, is a reminder that the castle has remained at the heart of civic life. The museum presents collections on the history of Vitré and the castle. The visit naturally combines with the half-timbered streets, the ramparts and the viewpoints over the Vilaine. Since 1 October 2026, the castle has been on low-season hours: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 10 am to 12.30 pm and 2 pm to 5.30 pm; Saturday and Sunday 2 pm to 5.30 pm; closed on Tuesdays.
