About
Once called Menez Gu, the Roche du Feu rises to 281 m in the heart of the Montagnes Noires. A strategic spot, fires were lit here to warn of Viking invasions, hence its name, the Fire Rock. From the town hall in Gouézec, a narrow street leads to the water tower, then a path enters the heathland, from rock to viewpoint. At the top, the panorama takes in the Aulne valley, the Monts d’Arrée, the bay of Douarnenez and, on a clear day, 33 bell towers within 40 km, and even the coast of the Cap-Sizun. The way back winds through the countryside via Croaz Toull. The loop is 5.4 km long; allow about 1 h 20 of walking. Start: near the town hall in Gouézec. The official route, published by the Pleyben-Châteaulin-Porzay community of communes, is shown on the map and can be downloaded as a GPX file to follow on your phone.
