About

Combourg is one of the most literary towns in Brittany. Its skyline is dominated by a medieval castle built from the 12th to the 15th century and inseparable from François-René de Chateaubriand, who spent part of his youth there. The writer did much to fix the Romantic image of the place, made of towers, nights, legends and the Lac Tranquille. But Combourg is more than its castle. The historic centre keeps a partly medieval layout, granite houses from the 16th and 17th centuries and several remarkable places such as the Maison de la Lanterne, the Cour du Temple and the Relais des Princes. An interpretation trail of twelve panels lets you explore the heritage at your own pace. In summer, a guided tour devoted to the “cradle of Romanticism” is offered (in 2026, every Wednesday from 8 July to 26 August), with a combined ticket available with the castle. The Lac Tranquille rounds off the visit perfectly with a more natural walk.

What you will see

  • The centre is freely accessible; the castle and guided tours depend on opening times.
  • Castle: a medieval fortress built from the 12th to the 15th century.
  • Heritage trail: 12 interpretation panels.
  • Summer guided tour: 1 h 30; in 2026, Wednesdays from 8 July to 26 August at 3 pm, €10 for adults, €5 for children aged 8 to 11, free under 8; combined tour and castle ticket listed at €18.70 per person.
  • The medieval town grew up around the fortress, and several 16th and 17th-century granite houses still stand.
  • Chateaubriand spent part of his youth at the castle, and his memories of Combourg deeply shaped his work; the town gradually became associated with literary Romanticism.
Show 4 more points
  • The Maison de la Lanterne is protected as a historic monument.
  • The Lac Tranquille is one of the landscapes most linked to the imagination of Combourg, and the town keeps several legends about the castle and the Chateaubriand family.
  • Not to be missed: the Château de Combourg, the Lac Tranquille, Place Chateaubriand, the statue of Chateaubriand, the Maison de la Lanterne, the Cour du Temple, the Relais des Princes, the Rue des Princes, the old centre, the heritage trail, the gloriette.
  • Recommended: visit the castle to understand the literary side of the place, follow the twelve-panel heritage trail, walk around the Lac Tranquille, join the summer guided tour on Chateaubriand, have a coffee or lunch around Place Chateaubriand, photograph the castle from the lakeside, and bring along a few extracts from Chateaubriand.

Tips on the spot

  • Arrive before 10 am in high season for fewer people; late afternoon is also calmer.
  • Use the official car parks and finish on foot; on market days or big events, allow more time to park.
  • Wear good shoes for cobbles, quays, paths and steps.
  • Start at the tourist office or an interpretation trail if there is one; guided tours give a much richer reading of local history.
  • Check the opening times of monuments and activities on the day; in winter, some close earlier.
