About
The Château de Combourg overlooks the lake and the small Cité de Caractère. Founded in the Middle Ages and transformed over the centuries, it took on major literary importance when the Chateaubriand family bought it in the 18th century. François-René de Chateaubriand spent part of his childhood here and left famous pages about it in his Memoirs from Beyond the Grave. The towers, rooms, staircases and park landscape are as much places of literary memory as pieces of architecture. The indoor visit is guided and lasts about 45 minutes. It takes in furnished rooms and mementoes of the family. The park can also be explored, depending on the ticket chosen. In 2026, the château reopened on 1 April. In autumn, opening hours and tour times change.
