What to do in Cancale: the complete guide
The oyster market at the port of La Houle, the oyster beds, the Pointe du Grouin, the Île des Landes, the beaches and the coastal path: what to do in and around Cancale.
6 min read
Cancale looks out over the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel, and has lived from its oysters for centuries. The upper town has its granite houses; the port of La Houle, below, its restaurants and its boats resting on the mud at low tide.
The oyster market
At the end of the port of La Houle, the producers sell their oysters all year round, opened on request. You eat them on the steps of the sea wall, facing the oyster beds, throwing the shells onto the shore: it is the tradition.
The oyster beds
At low tide, the oyster tables stretch as far as the eye can see in front of the port. Guided tours, with boots provided, take you among the beds, and the Ferme Marine explains every stage of oyster farming.
