About
The history of Rohan, “little rock” in Breton, has been tied to that of the Rohan family since 1120: their fortress stood on a promontory above the Oust. The Nantes to Brest canal later made it a busy trading place. Ten stops with information panels tell the town’s story. The Notre-Dame-de-Bonne-Encontre chapel, from 1510, listed as a historic monument in 1922, is the Flamboyant Gothic jewel of Rohan. The Saint-Gobrien church keeps early 20th century stained glass. The late 17th century grain hall, taken down in 1946, returned to its place in 2007. On the castle square you can picture the fortress that fell into ruin in the 18th century, before the Saint-Martin priory, rebuilt in 1812. The loop is 3.2 km long; allow about 50 minutes of walking. The stated level is easy. Start: lock keeper’s house no. 52, at the Rohan lock. The official route, published by Pontivy Communauté, is shown on the map and can be downloaded as a GPX file to follow on your phone. The route is listed in the département’s official walking route plan (PDIPR).
