About

Well preserved, the Notre-Dame de Timadeuc abbey, in Bréhan, is a working monastery in the middle of the countryside and one of the most visited sites in the Morbihan. Founded in 1841 by three monks from the abbey of La Trappe, in Normandy, it is home to a Trappist community that farms the land, ripens cheeses and makes fruit jellies; an audiovisual presentation at the gatehouse shows their life. The calvary, erected in 1946, pays tribute to Father Guénaël, who hid Resistance fighters and airmen during the war. The trail then reaches the Timadeuc lock, where stone from the monks’ quarry was unloaded to build the monastery. The loop is 4.5 km long; allow about 1 h 10 of walking. The stated level is easy. Start: the Notre-Dame de Timadeuc abbey, in Bréhan. The official route, published by Pontivy Communauté, is shown on the map and can be downloaded as a GPX file to follow on your phone. The route is listed in the département’s official walking route plan (PDIPR).
