Markets and lights, Christmas at Trévarez, great winter walks, indoor visits and Christmas Eve dinner: our ideas for the 2026 Christmas holidays in Brittany.
6 min read
The 2026 Christmas holidays run from Saturday 19 December to Monday 4 January 2027, for all three zones. The Breton winter is milder than you might think: it rarely freezes on the coast, the light is low and golden, and the great sites can be visited with nobody around.
Markets and illuminations
The big Christmas markets run until Christmas Eve or New Year’s Day: Nantes until 27 December, Rennes until 31 December and 4 January, Quimper and Vannes until 31 December. Christmas at Trévarez lights up its château every evening until 10 January, and the small towns of character, Locronan, Rochefort-en-Terre and Dinan, are lit up for the festive season.
Illuminated villages and castles

Walking by the sea in winter
It is the season of storms and end of the world skies. The Pointe du Raz, Cap Fréhel and the Pink Granite Coast can be explored without the summer crowds. Stay on the paths, back from the edge, and watch the sea from high ground when the wind blows.

Christmas Eve and festive food
Oysters from Cancale or the Ria d’Étel, scallops from the Bay of Saint-Brieuc, blue lobster: Breton food is made for celebrations. The Saturday morning markets are the place to buy them. For Christmas Eve dinner at a restaurant, book from November: the good restaurants are fully booked well in advance.
