Sleeping on a Breton island: our hotels

Belle-Île, Groix, Île de Batz: where to stay on a Breton island, from the thalassotherapy at Castel Clara to the small hotels near the harbour, and how to get there by boat.

6 min read

You only really discover an island in the evening, once the last boat has left with the day visitors. Staying overnight means having the coastal paths to yourself at sunset. Here are our hotels on three easy to reach islands.

Belle-Île-en-Mer

The largest of the Breton islands is reached by boat from Quiberon. On the wild coast, Castel Clara overlooks the Anse de Goulphar with a thalassotherapy centre. Close by, in Bangor, La Désirade brings together small houses in a large garden, with a heated pool. In Le Palais, where the boats dock, Le Saint Amant is 100 metres from the ferry terminal and Le Corto Maltese two minutes’ walk away; Le Clos Fleuri, a little higher up, rents electric bikes to explore the island.

The Île de Groix

Groix is reached by boat from Lorient. In the village, about 700 metres from the harbour at Port-Tudy, the Hôtel de la Marine has been fully renovated and has a pool heated all year round. Facing the arrival harbour, the Hôtel de la Jetée has only seven rooms and a studio, all facing the sea.

The Île de Batz

Opposite Roscoff, a fifteen minute crossing away, the Île de Batz is made for walking and cycling. On the landing stage, Les Herbes Folles has eight rooms, five with a sea view, and a panoramic winter garden.
