Five star hotels in Brittany

Castelbrac, L’Hermitage, Sofitel Quiberon, Balthazar, Locguénolé: the fifteen five star hotels in our guide to Brittany, coast by coast, and what makes each one special.

7 min read

The five star rating is awarded by Atout France to hotels offering exceptional service and comfort. Brittany has few of them, and almost all look out to sea. Here are the fifteen in our guide, from the seaside palace to the small castle with just a few rooms.

On the Emerald Coast

In Saint-Malo, the Grand Hôtel des Thermes stretches along the Sillon with its 177 rooms and suites, linked to a large thalassotherapy centre whose seawater pool is heated to 30 °C. Opposite, in Dinard, the Grand Hôtel Barrière looks across at the ramparts from the Baie du Prieuré, with 86 fully renovated rooms and a spa. A little further along the cliff road, Castelbrac plays the intimate card: 23 rooms and suites, all facing the sea.

In La Baule

La Baule’s great beach lines up three five star hotels from the Barrière group. L’Hermitage, facing the ocean since 1926, is the largest, with 200 rooms and suites, a spa and heated indoor and outdoor pools. Le Royal, with 87 rooms, is linked to a wellness centre and seawater pools. Le Castel Marie-Louise, a Belle Époque house with 31 rooms, is the most discreet.

In Morbihan and on the Pink Granite Coast

At the tip of the peninsula, the Sofitel Quiberon Thalassa has 125 rooms and a 6,000 m² thalassotherapy institute. In Arzon, at Port du Crouesty, Miramar La Cigale offers 113 rooms and a panoramic seawater pool. On the banks of the Blavet, the Domaine de Locguénolé, a Relais & Châteaux, combines a castle, a park and a Michelin starred restaurant. Further north, L’Agapa is one of the few five star addresses on the Pink Granite Coast, with 45 rooms and a 400 m² spa.

Near the big cities, castles and city addresses

In Rennes, the Balthazar brings together two historic buildings in the city centre, 56 rooms and a spa with a sensory pool. On the edge of the city, the Château d’Apigné has only 16 rooms, in a 25 hectare park. In Nantes, Maison Maubreuil, a member of Small Luxury Hotels, hides 13 rooms in the heart of the city, each with its own world; its older sibling, the Château de Maubreuil, has 17 in Carquefou. Finally, in Missillac, the Domaine de la Bretesche spreads its rooms and villas over 200 hectares around an 18 hole golf course.
