Where to stay in Brittany

Campsite, hotel or unusual stay: what the star rating means, when to book, and where to base your stay on the coast.

7 min read

The choice is first about location, not comfort. A pleasant room forty minutes from the sea is worth less, on a short stay, than an ordinary room ten minutes away: Brittany is explored along the coast, and every round trip inland costs an hour of your day.

The second question is the season. In July and August, the coast is booked several months ahead, and seaside pitches go first. The rest of the year, the question does not arise, but many places are closed.

What a campsite’s stars mean

Campsite ratings are official in France: they are awarded by Atout France for five years, from one to five stars, on a grid of about two hundred criteria that must be 95% met. It covers pitch size, facilities, services, welcome, safety and accessibility. It says nothing about the view or the peace and quiet.

Prices, opening dates and availability change from one season to the next: check with the campsite.

Hotels, and where to look for them

Seaside hotels are concentrated in the old resorts, Dinard, Bénodet, Perros-Guirec and La Baule, where seaside tourism goes back a century and a half. The port towns, Saint-Malo, Brest, Vannes and Concarneau, offer more choice for the same price, and a town centre where you can walk to dinner.

Sleeping somewhere different

Brittany has a tradition of places to stay unlike anything else: treehouses, lighthouses, mills, gypsy caravans, former keepers’ houses. They are booked earlier than hotels, because they often have only two or three units.

June and September are the two months recommended by those who know the region: the days are still long, the sea has kept its summer warmth (seventeen degrees in September against eighteen in August, its peak), and there is room everywhere.
